Knight TR-106 XCVR

June 1999: Dave Mitchell Writes:

Now I'm dating myself, as my first station to hit the air was a National NC-125 and a Knight-Kit T-60 on CW. But looking at your site really brings back the memories. Keep up the good work.

Someone sent this in recently:
FYI:
Re: The Knight T-50(kit). The T-50 was CW only, 80-10 meter kit. A 6AG7 driving an
807 final @ 50 watts input. Orignially went by
Allied PN S-255 and later was called T-50.

The Knight Kit Co. of Chicago, IL

The Knight Kit Co. was in business from around 1957 to 1966,
advertising their catalog, but little else, in the pages of QST and CQ magazines.
Allied Radio, which owned Knight, was in business from the 1920s. Allied is still
in business today selling electronic parts!
I do not have a Knight catalog, nor do I know much of the history of this short-lived,
but very popular company. Their customers were primarily young, shortwave listevers,
aspiring radio amateurs, and new novices anxious to get something on the air that
they could afford. They sold many many shortwave receievers to the SWLs of that era,
and the teenage hams whose budget did not run to Collins or even Hallicrafters
often went for the Knight T-60. The later, and more powerful T-150 was a bit of a flop
selling far less units. I saw one of these in operation in a dormitory room at
Georgia Tech, in the autumn of 1967 and it was a serious
TVI/RFI generator!
Does anyone know WHEN and HOW Knight Co. started?

Brian,

As a native Chicagoan, I spend many Saturdays in my youth at Allied and the surrounding shops. I have a few pictures of the old building taken in 1957 and last summer. You might want to add a link on your Knight-Allied page.

I just received my copy of " Electric Radio " , a wonderful magazine for those of us that remember yester year , and could not wait to go to the Knight web page . My first kit was a Knight kit Star Roamer back in 1964 .I spent many happy hours assembling it in my room behind the garage . and after it did not work on the first power up , I took it down to the local radio and TV repair shop to beg for help ! They were kind enough to help me out and so I began to make the shop my hangout after school and on Saturdays .The experience gave me a reputation of a kit builder , so when the local orphanage was donnated a Knight Kit R-100 receiver , my learned talents were summoned .It was quite enjoyable and of course led me into building the Heathkit SB series ham gear .I now have that diagnosed Nostalgia Disease to own all of the wonderful radio kits of that era . So if you see someone at a hamfest with an arm load of old kits , you will understand that it could be me still suffering from the disease . Brent aka KC4IEL ..........PS anybody know where I can find a Knight T-50 ?

I just had to tell this to somebody: I recently picked up a Star Roamer at a hamfest. Didn't know if it worked, or if it ever had. Plugged it in the other night- nothing. Took off the covers and inside the bottom one someone had printed in big magic-marker letters, 2 inch high: NUTS!

Glad to know I'm not the only one to reach that point!

Just thinking -- could this have been USA General McAulliffe's personal set?

It's nice to see some stuff on Knight Kits. I grew up in the
Chicago area and even though the Heathkit store was closer in
Lincolnwood, I really liked the Allied, 100 N. Western Store.
My interest in kit building started in the mid to late 60's so I
missed some of Knight's ham radio hey days.
